This Ethiopian Mocha and Java Estate blend is named for King Louis XIV of France. Louis XIV had a well-known obsession for coffee, but it was the one thing that he did not control. In the late 17th and early 18th century, the Dutch controlled coffee production worldwide. Thus, one of Louis' loyal subjects, Gabriel Mathieu de Clieu, succeeded in smuggling coffee plants from the Dutch island of Java. These coffee seedlings became the forebearers of coffee trees that were planted in French territory throughout the Western Hemisphere. As you drink this coffee, pause and pay homage to Louis XIV for bringing coffee to the new world.
